The classic shopping game show Supermarket Sweep is headed back to television. As soon as the word got out about the reboot, social media went crazy. Apparently, there are a lot of fans out there of this shopping frenzy of a show.
British company Freemantle Media recently acquired the rights to the show.
“The time is ripe to bring back this all-time favourite game show which has traveled with such success over the years,” Freemantle Media’s EVP of Global Acquisitions and Development Vasha Wallace said. “Now, modern technology allows us the opportunity to update the show, making it relevant for a 21st-century audience.”
If you don’t know how the show works, here’s a breakdown. On the original version, three teams would compete against each other to answer questions and puzzles all related to shopping. At the end, they would attempt to fill their shopping baskets with the most expensive items in the shortest amount of time as possible.
Of course, that portion of the show was everyone’s favorite. The shoppers would spend time running around the store, throwing everything from frozen turkeys to diapers in their baskets. Once the baskets were full or when the time ran out, cashiers would tally the baskets to see which team was the winner.
The show first aired during the 1960s. However, it wasn’t until the 90s when it really took off. By that time, Supermarket Sweep had moved from ABC to Lifetime, and everyone had huge matching sweaters.
Right now, we have no information about when we can expect to see this show hit the small screen again. We do know that Freemantle is shopping networks in hopes of finding it a new home. Hopefully, they will find one quickly because I think we are all ready to watch this fun show once more. For now, we should all just sit back, relax and improve our shopping skills. Maybe then we will be ready to enjoy watching the show as experts.
