Sturgill Simpson is giving fans a sample of his highly-anticipated third studio album ahead of its release later this year.
The alt-country phenomeonon appeared on Beats 1 Radio with Zane Lowe on March 3 to discuss his upcoming record, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth. The 37-year-old singer-songwriter introduced his brand new single “Brace for Impact,” a soulful guitar-driven track that features a more evolved sound with obvious psych rock influences.
“I wanted to sort of reverse engineer the song craft this time around,” Simpson told Lowe about his newest project. “In country music especially, it can get very formulaic. [The album] is just a representation of where my heart and where my head were at the time when we went into the studio.”
The exciting news comes just a day after Simpson’s social media pages were covered with a mysterious illustration of two skeletons, which many assumed was a sign of a imminent announcement. Although Simpson still hasn’t revealed an exact release date for A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, multiple sources indicate that it’s set to hit stores sometime in summer 2016.
