Guy Clark is one of the best things to ever come out of Texas. He is an absolute master songwriter and storyteller. Many of his songs tell vivid stories from the first-person perspective of his characters.
One of my favorite Guy Clark characters is the man in “The Guitar”. While walking the streets, he wanders into pawn shop and finds a “beat up old guitar hanging on the wall” that seems to be calling to him. When he starts playing it, something magical happens, and he later learns there’s more to the busted ax than what appears.
“The Guitar” is featured on Clark’s album, Somedays the Song Writes You. If you play the guitar, you know that sometimes the guitar plays you.
