See Chris Stapleton and Dwight Yoakam Sing ‘Seven Spanish Angels’ at CMA Awards

Last year, Chris Stapleton, wife Morgane and pop star Justin Timberlake stole the CMA Awards with their explosive performance. One year later, the Stapletons took the CMA Awards stage again, this time sharing it with country legend Dwight Yoakam for a rendition of “Seven Spanish Angels.”

This year’s performance was more subdued but showed every bit of talent that the Stapletons and Yoakam bring to the stage. For dyed-in-the-wool country fans, this was one of the best performances of the show. The trio lent their rich vocals to the song, originally a duet by Willie Nelson and Ray Charles.

Stapleton took home the awards for Male Vocalist of the Year and Music Video of the Year for “Fire Away.” The powerful video addresses mental health issues.

Yoakam also appeared during the CMA Awards opening performance to play a few lines of his song “Guitars and Cadillacs.”

“Seven Spanish Angels” Lyrics:

He looked down into her brown eyes,

Said, ” Say a prayer for me.”

She threw her arms around him,

Whispered, “God will keep us free.”

And they could hear the riders comin’,

He said, “This is my last fight.

If they take me back to Texas,

They won’t take me back alive.”

And there were seven Spanish Angels,

At the alter of the Sun.

They were prayin’ for the lovers,

In the valley of the gun.

And when the battle stopped,

And the smoke cleared.

There was thunder from the throne.

And seven Spanish angels,

Took another angel home.

She reached down and picked the gun up,

That lay smokin’ in his hand.

Said, “Father please forgive me,

I can’t make it without my man.”

And she knew the gun was empty,

And she knew she couldn’t win.

But her final prayer was answered,

When the rifles fired again.

And there were seven Spanish Angels,

At the alter of the Sun.

They were prayin’ for the lovers,

In the valley of the gun.

And when the battle stopped,

And the smoke cleared.

There was thunder from the throne.

And seven Spanish angels,

Took another angel home.
