Willie Nelson supplied a heartfelt rendition of “Imagine” during a star-studded celebration of John Lennon’s life in New York City earlier this month.
On Dec. 19, AMC aired Imagine: John Lennon’s 75th Birthday Concert, which featured appearances from Chris Stapleton, Eric Church, Aloe Blacc, Sheryl Crow, Peter Frampton, Kris Kristofferson, Juanes, Pat Monahan, Steven Tyler, Tom Morello and the Roots.
In the video above, you’ll see Nelson as he performs in front of a screen that shows images of the Imagine memorial in Central Park’s Strawberry Fields. The acoustically-led version of Lennon’s massive hit was one of the more emotional moments of the special, which was filled with musical tributes to the former Beatle.
“It’s beautiful to see so many wonderful and talented musicians come together for this special show to celebrate John’s birthday,” Yoko Ono, Lennon’s widow, said in a statement. “John’s art continues to give hope, light and happiness to generations of people everywhere. His belief that each of us can change the world continues to inspire the human race to believe in themselves, and his influence is everlasting in everyone’s hearts as we all share in the possibilities and power of music.”
