As news of Merle Haggard’s passing spread across the globe on April 6, many country music lovers found themselves paying tribute to the legend in their own special way. Rising artist and fellow Californian Sam Outlaw chose to pay tribute to the Hag by performing a rendition of his famous song “Silver Wings” during his sold out show in Oslo, Norway.
As he strummed the first few chords of the song, the crowd responded with an emotional roar of applause and cheers. “They’re taking you away, leaving me lonely,” he sang out, musically tipping his hat to the late star. “Silver wings slowly fading out of sight.”
When backing vocalist Molly Jenson joined in on harmonies for the second verse, the feeling of sadness and remembrance seems to fill the room. Although mournful, there’s still a sense of joy and appreciation for the time and great works that Haggard left behind.
Overall, the performance was both a poignant and fitting tribute to the the grandfather of California country music. Click below to watch Sam Outlaw cover Merle Haggard’s classic track “Silver Wings” in Norway.
