Happy birthday, John Rich! The Amarillo native turns 42 today (Jan. 7), and he certainly has a lot to celebrate. Rich’s duo Big & Rich has seen a revival of great proportions after their comeback album Gravity garnered critical acclaim, anchored by the Rich-penned single “Look At You,” which became the band’s second Top 10 song. Oh, and they released the record completely independently.
Of course, Rich got his start at the ripe young age of 18 as the bassist and co-vocalist of Lonestar from 1992 through 1998. Like the rest of the band, Rich was always very proud of his Texas heritage. Just watch him perform “Amarillo By Morning” at the George Strait Artist of the Decade concert and call for more of that “West Texas fiddle.” And there’s a good chance he was born in that black hat with that handlebar mustache.
We all know Rich can show great hospitality for others on their birthday — like that time he threw a 21st birthday party for country newcomer RaeLynn at his Nashville home, which he cleverly dubbed “Mt. Richmore.” The party featured all sorts of famous friends, including Miranda Lambert. Let’s hope somebody throws Rich an equally awesome party for his 42nd (maybe even twice as epic as RaeLynn’s 21st, for obvious reasons).
If you want to get Rich a present, request your favorite country station play Big & Rich’s newest single, “Lovin’ Lately” (featuring Tim McGraw). The duo just released the single to radio last month.
