The surprise collaboration occurred at the inaugural American Roots Festival in Raleigh, N.C. on Oct. 18. Singer Joanna Cotten also joined in the performance, which drew constant waves of cheers and screams from unassuming fans from start to finish.
The three artists each perform their own verse during the song, which is filled with incredible guitar solos from both Church and Haynes, who is best known for his work as a celebrated guitarist in the Allman Brothers.
Just two days earlier, both artists were also inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. It’s clear that the importance of the moment wasn’t lost on Church, who couldn’t stop smiling and laughing as he stood on-stage beside one of his idols.
Earlier this summer, Church, Cotten and Ryan Bingham performed their own rendition of “The Weight” during one of two sold-out acoustic shows at Nashville’s Ascend Amphitheater. It seems that this specific performance, which marks an important milestone in his career, will be one that Church won’t soon forget.
