After presenting Parton with the Tex Ritter Award for her record-breaking 2015 TV movie, Coat of Many Colors, Perry joined the vivacious 70-year-old for a performance of her hit song of the same name. The brightly-colored production then slid into a duet-style version of “Jolene,” which caused Parton to playfully call Perry a “shameless hussy.”
The duo wrapped things up with the anthemic “9 to 5,” which caused the crowd to erupt in a giant sing-along. Coat of Many Colors lead actress Alyvia Alyn Lind couldn’t get enough of the performance and danced alongside her father from the front row. Kacey Musgraves, who previously performed with Perry for CMT’s Crossroads special in 2014, also showed off some dance moves from the crowd while cheering the pair on.
Although the duet wasn’t the best career performance from either Perry or Parton, it was one of the more lighthearted and inspired moments in an overall rather anti-climactic award ceremony.
