During a night full of pop-influenced performances, Chris Stapleton kept things country with his energetic performance of “Parachute” at the 2016 CMT Music Awards.

The up-tempo single is featured on Stapleton’s critically-acclaimed solo debut, Traveller, and is steadily climbing up the country airplay charts this month. Joined as always by his equally talented wife Morgane, Stapleton brought the house down inside Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, thanks to his always-powerful vocals and impressive guitar-playing.

This year’s CMT Music Awards were trying harder than ever to bridge the gap between pop and country by bringing in collaborations between Cassadee Pope and Latin rapper Pitbull, Billy Ray Cyrus and classic rockers Cheap Trick, along with Cam and girl group Fifth Harmony. While some of these attempts worked better than others, Stapleton’s appearance reminded us all what true country music sounds like.

Although he didn’t accomplish an entire sweep of the awards, Stapleton did walk away with the trophy for Breakthrough Video of the Year. His video for “Fire Away” was praised for its honest and revealing look at depression and the effects it has not only on the sufferer, but their friends and family.
