Chris and Morgane Stapleton paid tribute to the late Merle Haggard with a cover of his classic hit, “Today I Started Loving You Again.”
During their recent tour stop in Mesa, AZ, the talented couple took a moment to remember the country legend who passed away on April 6. Over the past year, Stapleton has drawn comparisons to Haggard for his “outlaw country” reminiscent style and sound. Much like the Hag himself, the rising star doesn’t seem to put much thought or time into the idea of being traditional country music’s saving grace. Instead, he simply plays the songs that mean something to him and lets them speak for themselves.
Just like most every other song he performs, Stapleton put everything he had into his musical tribute. Morgane’s hauntingly beautiful harmonies help carry the song, which stays close to Haggard’s original. The Stapletons are experts at showing their incredible vocal ranges without overpowering the song, and that quality shines through in this heartfelt cover. Out of the hundreds of musical tributes to Haggard that have emerged since his death, this simple but stirring rendition is definitely one of the best.
