Georgia native Billy Currington paid tribute to his home state with a cover of “Always on My Mind.”
The 42-year-old enjoyed a special homecoming when his current Summer Forever Tour made a stop in Macon, Ga. over the weekend. During his energetic set, he took a moment to slow things down with a very special rendition of the state of Georgia’s official song.
The slow and somewhat sultry cover showed off Currington’s impressive vocal control and soulful sound. It’s hard for even the best performers to cover a classic without it sounding like a cheap rip-off. While his rendition musically stayed close to the original, it never veered into karaoke territory.
For years, Currington has been one of the most underrated talents in mainstream country. Although lighthearted and somewhat simple, the cover stands as an example of his ability to stay true to his sound while tipping a hat to other genres.
Keep your fingers crossed that Currington will provide even more great covers as his tour with Kelsea Ballerini and Russell Dickerson continues across the country over the next few months.
