Secret Santas are Paying off Strangers’ Layaway Bills Across the Country

Christmas is a time for giving, and a few kind-hearted secret Santas are getting into the spirit by paying off every layaway bill at their local retail store.

On Dec. 11, an anonymous donor known only as “Santa B.” paid off all the layaway bills at the Walmart in Everett, Pa. to the tune of about $40,000. But this isn’t the first time Santa B. has surprised strangers.

According to WJAC, this is the second year in a row this has happened at the Everett Walmart.

“Bills were really high for December,” Kristen Martin said to WJAC. “I had like an $800 water bill, so it’s just like, ‘Well I’m gonna go and put stuff on layaway and hope for the best.'”

Last year, the Bedford County Free Press broke the story on their Facebook page. The publication stated that a male signed the check, but a female delivered it. That’s the only clue they would offer.

In Milford, N.J., a secret Santa paid off almost $50,000 worth of merchandise, The Daily Journal reported. That covered the Christmases of 223 locals.

Some folks were speculating that the anonymous philanthropist might be major league baseball player Mike Trout. Trout is a Millville native, but a Walmart employee confirmed that it was not him.

“Only me, I’m the only one who knows,” Walmart Manager Rosie Kaur told the Daily Journal. “He’s a local businessman, a very nice person. The customers were so grateful that someone wanted to do that.”

In Cherry Hill, N.J., a man named Charlie K. covered 62 layaway orders at the local Toys-R-Us, and then donated a further $2,000 to the Toys for Tots program, according to NJ.com.

Christmas time is a time of generosity and love for your fellow man, and these secret Santas are doing it right.
