Veteran Can’t Afford Groceries in San Antonio, But Watch How Bystanders React

There’s a reason why they call San Antonio “Military City USA.” It’s home to three military bases, and has one of the largest military populations in the nation. San Antonians are proud of the military, and they truly know what it means to support the troops, as you’ll see in this video.

The clip is from ABC’s What Would You Do?, a hidden-camera show that observes how bystanders react to uncomfortable social situations. In this episode, the show wanted to see what San Antonians would do if they saw a veteran in need.

The experiment takes place at a La Fiesta supermarket. One actor plays a struggling veteran who is shopping for his wife and newborn. His list includes essentials like food, diapers and formula, as well as a case of beer, but he doesn’t have enough money to pay. Another actor plays the veteran’s cashier.

For the show, hidden cameras observed how people waiting in line behind him reacted when they saw he couldn’t pay. Their responses were remarkable. Nearly everyone offered to cover his bill, and many offered him kind words of support. See how it played out in the video below:
