21 years ago, Garth Brooks marked a new milestone in his career when he performed alongside KISS on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
Seemingly an unlikely pairing, the two superstar acts were brought together to promote the release of KISS My Ass: Classic KISS Regrooved, a KISS tribute album. Brooks was the only country act chosen to be featured on the rock group’s 12-track project. Other big-name performers like Stevie Wonder and Lenny Kravitz also supplied their own versions of KISS hits on the compilation. Brooks wanted to stay true to the band’s original sound and was the only artist to request the band perform with him on the album.
At the time, Brooks was enjoying the success of his album, In Pieces, and was in the midst of a massive world tour. The day after the memorable performance with KISS, the country artist broke records by selling 8,000 tickets to a charity concert at the Hollywood Bowl in only 21 minutes. If you weren’t around back in 1994, or just haven’t seen the performance yet, do yourself a favor and watch the video above. It’s a fun look back into the mid-1990s, when Brooks’ career was rapidly approaching the superstar status he’s known for today.
