Ray Wylie Hubbard famously quipped that he “didn’t want to peak too soon” when he didn’t appear on the Late Show with David Letterman until he was 66 years old. It seems that tongue-in-cheek strategy has paid off, because just five years later, Hubbard earns the distinction of induction into the Texas Heritage Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.

The Texas Heritage Songwriters’ Association (TxHSA) puts on the event Saturday, Feb. 24. From the looks of the lineup, it’ll be one heck of a night.

The evening takes place at Austin’s historic Paramount Theater. Ray Wylie Hubbard joins an impressive list of inductees. In addition to Hubbard, the night honors hit songwriter Liz Rose, the late great Mickey Newbury and American icon Buddy Holly.

This makes the 12th class of inductees into Texas Heritage Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. So far, the organization honored legends like Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison, Townes Van Zandt, Kris Kristofferson and many more.

At the show, expect to see plenty of big names grace the stage in honor of the inductees. Eric Church, Jack Ingram and Hayes Carll all plan to join Hubbard in a performance for the evening. While Ingram and Carll have collaborated with Hubbard plenty of times, Hubbard’s connection to Church grew stronger and stronger throughout the years.

In 2015, Church name-dropped Hubbard in his critically lauded “Mr. Misunderstood.” This year, Church joined Hubbard on his most recent record Tell The Devil I’m Gettin’ There As Fast As I Can.

The TxHSA puts on the Hall of Fame ceremony to celebrate icons in Texas culture. It’s part of the group’s simple yet noble mission. “To honor and celebrate Texas songwriters who have played an important role in defining and interpreting Texas’ distinctive culture.”

A small number of tickets for the awards show go on sale Friday, Jan. 26. You can get them from the Paramount Theater box office.
