Glass Gem corn is the name given to one specifically gorgeous variety of corn. The rainbow colored seeds are selected by farmer and Native American corn expert Carl Barnes.
According to the Glass Gem Facebook page, Glass Gem corn seeds produce a diversity of gorgeous translucent, jewel-colored ears, each one unique. Yes, they’re colorful, but they’re still all-natural. The multi-hued ears are created from heirloom-style farming.
Barne’s created these corn seeds by growing older varieties and then isolating heirloom seeds that were lost in the 1800s. In 1994, Barnes shared some of the seeds with a farmer named Greg Schoen who planted some of them in his field next to traditional yellow corn. The result was a new variety, what we know as Glass Gem corn.
Schoen then passed some of the hybrid seeds to Bill McDorman, who is now the Executive Director of Native Seeds/SEARCH. You can purchase the seeds through Native Seeds/SEARCH (a non-profit conservation organization) which helps ensure these rare and endangered seed varieties get passed on. One packet of seeds is only $4.95.
The size of the ears can range anywhere from three to eight inches, and the height of the plants can reach up to six to nine-feet.
So, if you’ve been looking to add some color to your backyard or your gardens, Glass Gem corn is the way to go!
