The Academy of Country Music (ACM) recently announced the creation of the Merle Haggard Spirit Award to honor of the icon’s legacy. The ACM will present Miranda Lambert with the award at the upcoming ACM Honors Ceremony.
Haggard had an undeniable impact on country music, and the new award is meant to acknowledge a singer who has done the same. According to the ACM, the Merle Haggard Spirit Award is intended for a singer “whose career reflects the uncompromising integrity and steadfastness of spirit embodied by the late Merle Haggard.”
Lambert is certainly deserving of the honor. The “Vice” singer is known for her edgy songs and unapologetic lyrics. Lambert has paved the way for fierce, modern female country artists who go against the grain.
Lambert presented Haggard the Crystal Milestone Award at the 49th annual ACM Awards. Little Big Town will receive the Crystal Milestone Award earlier this year.
Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley, Luke Bryan, Cam, Toby Keith, Alicia Keys, Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris, Blake Shelton, Cole Swindell, Keith Urban and many more are scheduled to perform.
Hosted by Lady Antebellum, the ACM Honors will take place on Aug. 30. The show will later air on Sept. 9 on CBS.
