Millennials Try Moonshine for the First Time

The first time you sip on moonshine is kind of like the first time you eat a whole habanero pepper; you elicit an audible, “wheeeeeeee-ee!” and follow it up with something like a “Holy mother of…” as your face contorts into strange shapes. And then you learn to love it.

However, most people haven’t tried the stuff. Up until a few years ago, the high-proof spirit made from corn mash was mostly outlawed in the U.S. In 2009, Tennessee legalized some moonshine production as a way to bounce back from the recession. You’ll also find “moonshine” on labels in your local liquor store, but those brands are usually white whiskeys that aren’t exactly the real thing.

In this video, an eclectic group of millennial staffers at Buzzfeed take their first sips of moonshine, both the lower-proof brands and the real-deal, homemade, 180-proof variety. Their reactions are pretty entertaining.

Remind you of your first sip?

If you’re interested in making your own batch of flavored white lightning, check out the video recipe for apple pie moonshine below. To make it, you can use either Everclear, store-bought shine like the Ole Smokey brand in the vidoe, or the real-deal, but you probably have to know a guy for that.
