Marty Stuart and his wife Connie Smith will help pay tribute to their longtime friend Merle Haggard at his funeral this weekend.
According to the Tennessean, memorial services for the legendary singer will be private, and will be held at his home studio in Palo Cedro, CA on Saturday, April 9 at 1 p.m. Haggard passed away following a battle with pneumonia on April 6, his 79th birthday.
“I found out yesterday that Merle had preplanned his own service,” Stuart explained. “He requested that Connie sing ‘Precious Memories,’ that me and Connie sing his song ‘Silver Wings,” and that I officiate the service. We’re honored to do it.”
According to the Bakersfield Californian, Haggard also asked for Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson to attend the service and sing a song of their choosing in his will. His son, Ben Haggard, and nephew Jim will act as pallbearers.
So far, no public memorial services have been announced in either his home state of Bakersfield or in Nashville. Fans who would like to send flowers in memory of Haggard can do so through Anderson Florist, 2820 Freeman St., #1, Anderson, CA, 96007, or a donation can be made in Haggard’s name to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
