This information comes from music data company EchoNest, who used data collected from all around the nation to determine the most popular band or artist in each state.
On their blog, EchoNest stated, “In the course of providing all of these personalized recommendations, we see detailed listening data for millions of anonymous listeners. We can extract all kinds of interesting things from that data about how musical taste varies in various groups of people, based on the real world.” [Click here to enlarge the map]
This data mining has provided some interesting tidbits. For example, Florida Georgia Line is most popular in Ohio, while Florida apparently prefers rapper Rick Ross, and Georgia is searching for the hip-hop artist Future. This geographical affinity for rap might explain all the hip-hop references in FGL’s music.
Other country musicians who made the map include Jason Aldean who is a favorite in Oklahoma, and just further north, Eric Church is the most popular recording artist in Kansas. New Mexico is completely devoted to Alan Jackson, and folks in Montana love them some Tim McGraw. Check out the map and see if the rest of your state is searching for your favorite artist!
