There are few things more heartbreaking than seeing an animal who has been abused.
When staffers from a local animal shelter came to rescue a pit bull that had been dumped behind an Orlando, Fla. home, they weren’t prepared for what they saw.
Khalessi, the 2-year-old pup, had gone through horrendous abuse by her owner. When she was found, she couldn’t move due to a broken back, ribs and immobile hind legs. Khalessi was also missing half of her face from being tortured. She had no nose and was also missing a sinus cavity.
Stephanie Paquin, founder and director of Passion 4 Pits, a dog-fostering program, stepped in to take care of the injured animal. Although you may assume Khalessi would be frightened or violent toward anyone who tried to come close to her, Paquin had a very different experience with the young dog.
“As soon as we went into the clinic to see her she was just so ridiculously happy for attention… she had an amazing spirit,” Paquin said to The Orlando Sentinel. “It’s exceedingly rare that she can be as forgiving and trusting as she is because she has been through so much… she’s met hundreds of people and never once shown any reaction other than happiness.”
Paquin plans on taking care of Khalessi until the pup is fully rehabilitated.
“It’s going to be at least six months of surgery before we can issue an adoption,” Paquin told WRIC. “Our focus is on getting her a nasal cavity because she’s in danger of aspirating whenever she eats or drinks something.”
