Black's Barbecue Pitmaster, Edgar Black Jr., Dies

Black's Barbecue in Lockhart, Texas is mourning the loss of a legend today. Pitmaster Edgar Black Jr. died on Friday (June 2) at the age of 91. Friends and family surrounded Black at the time of his passing.

Black's BBQ made the announcement of Black's passing on their Facebook page.

"We miss you and are forever grateful for your love, generosity, and so much more," the post says. "Thank you for everything you taught us and the legacy you left for us to live up to."

After the announcement, messages from patrons came pouring in from all over the country. Thousands of people reacted to the announcement, sharing their condolences. Some of those who knew Black shared their personal memories they had with him.

The family will hold a funeral on Tuesday, June 6 at 3 p.m. following a visitation scheduled for Monday, June 5. After the funeral, the family is planning a catered BBQ meal at The First United Methodist Church in honor of the BBQ legend.

Blacks Barbecue has been a staple in Lockhart since the first restaurant opened in 1932 under the direction of Edgar Black Sr. BBQ runs in the family, and four generations of the family have been actively preparing BBQ. Chances are, this will continue to be a family tradition for many years to come.

Black Jr's BBQ family will definitely miss him. However, he will live on in the recipes and memories he and his family created along the way. The restaurant is a favorite in Lockhart and is one of the best BBQ joints in Texas. With their mouthwatering options, it's easy to see why.
