Kris Kristofferson Opens up About Battle with Memory Loss

Kris Kristofferson is no stranger to the difficulties of memory loss. In fact, he has been fighting this battle himself for several years. Now, a surprising diagnosis has completely changed everything about his struggle, the chosen treatment and his prognosis.

When Kris first began exhibiting signs of memory loss, his doctors were also at a loss. Some believed that he was suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s, while others believed it was due to the rough sports he played as a child. Since he was active in rugby, boxing and football, this was a logical explanation.

After countless medications failed to make a difference, Kris’s doctors decided to try something entirely different; they tested him for Lyme disease. Surprisingly, he tested positive and treatment began immediately.

Finally, just weeks away from his 80th birthday, Kris’s wife began seeing her husband come back to her. Now, while he still has bad days, she says, “some days he’s perfectly normal and it’s easy to forget that he is even battling anything.”

When asked in a recent interview with Rolling Stone Country, Kris is rather straightforward about the prospect of losing his memory, he says that it would do no good to fear losing it. This was the same mentality he took when doctors were wheeling him into surgery for bypass surgery 17 years ago. His wife whispered, “I hope it’s not goodbye,” and he responded by saying, “So what if it is?”

Instead of trying to control his own life, Kris relies on God to do the hard work for him, saying, “I just always have the feeling that He knows what He’s doing.”
