Kenny Chesney‘s legion of adoring fans will have to wait another few months for the release of his new album Some Town Somewhere. “No Shoes Nation,” as they’re called, were looking forward to the July 8 release, but now won’t get the album until October 28.
In a press release, Chesney said that he’s delaying the album in order to include a new duet called “Setting The World On Fire” with pop star P!NK.
“To have a song that is so ‘right in the moment’ is a rare thing,” says Chesney. “‘Somewhere With You’ had it, too. But that’s a song of wanting, and this, this is a song of being. But the more I listened, the more I knew I needed a woman’s voice, to be in the song with me. P!NK’s voice holds so many feelings all at the same time: joy, desire, a bit of toughness, a little hurt. She’s an incredible singer – and has this great tone that shines but has a little wear to it, but doesn’t sound beat up. So I called her.”
It’s great praise for P!NK, who is certainly one of pop’s most talented singers. But it’s also a very peculiar decision, given the album was scheduled to release this Friday. It’s likely that Chesney and his team knew well in advance they weren’t ready to release the album. Otherwise, they just had to scrap potentially millions of dollars in CD manufacturing, distribution and advertising.
While the duet with P!NK is hopefully going to be great, there’s no way this one song was the sole reason Chesney decided to delay the album. Yet, based on the press release, fans are certainly being led to think so.
“Sure, it would be easier to just leave everything on schedule,” says Chesney. “But when you have something you know is great, and it captures the best part of being alive, why wouldn’t you slow down enough to make it happen in the moment? That’s what ‘Setting The World On Fire’ is all about – and I figure it may be a while before I make another record, and I don’t want to wait to share this because it’s so good.”
There has to be more motivating factors behind the decision, and it’s not a surprise that Chesney is teaming up with a pop star for a duet. Brad Paisley just did the same thing with Demi Lovato on “Without A Fight,” Jennifer Nettles has a song with Jennifer Lopez and Blake Shelton has a song with his girlfriend pop star Gwen Stefani.
But for now, we’ll have to take Chesney’s word for it that the decision to delay the album for 3 months (only 2 days away from its scheduled release) was simply because this P!NK duet is too good to sit on. Hopefully No Shoes Nation won’t get drunk and trash the place like they did in Pittsburgh a few days ago.
