Kacey Musgraves has toured the country, walked countless red carpets and rubbed elbows with her idols, including Willie Nelson. But don’t think for a second that the Golden, Texas native has forgotten where she came from. Musgraves insists that she’s still “just a dime store cowgirl.”
In “Dime Store Cowgirl,” her latest release from the forthcoming Pageant Material, Musgraves sings: “And maybe for a minute, I got too big for my britches, but I’m just a dime store cowgirl.”
Musgraves’ new record, available June 23, will be a refreshing release for the country music industry, and she admits it’s “country as s—.” Like her debut album, Same Trailer Different Park, Musgraves’ sophomore record pairs her classic storytelling lyrics with an undeniable country sound. And fans are getting a sneak peek of the highly anticipated release with “Dime Store Cowgirl.”
“Pageant Material lives in a Western-tinged world, and the songs are like little stories,” Musgraves told People. “’Dime Store Cowgirl’ is really special to me. Every single thing in this song is true. It’s really from this small town girl’s point of view.”
The 26-year-old says the inspiration for the song’s fun title stems back from a comment someone made to her over a decade ago.
“I had this title saved for a while,” Musgraves explained. “It’s something that someone said to me a long time ago… I like to cock my hat back – my cowboy hat – which I still think is really cute today, and I was like doing my own thing, and this stage mom came over and she was like ‘Don’t wear your hat like that. You’re going to look like some dime store cowgirl.’ So there’s a song now.”
