Kacey Musgraves is spreading the holiday cheer! Or at least the holiday-themed music. The country darling recently released A Very Kacey Christmas, her first Christmas album.
It features four originals, and if “Present Without a Bow” is any indication, they still contain that classic Kacey vibe. No saccharine-sweet sentiment here. In fact, Musgraves sounds downright melancholy on this stellar performance. “The holiday is just another day that’s cold,” she laments. “I don’t feel the cheer without you here.”
Musgraves nails every little inflection in the song, decked out in front of a snow-themed set.
Kacey Musgraves revealed the news of her first Christmas album back in the summer when she began recording. In the studio version, fellow Texas and soul throwback sensation Leon Bridges joined in on the tune. In that version, he takes the second verse. He also had a hand in writing it.
Musgraves also wrote a song on the album called “A Willie Nice Christmas.” You get one guess as to who the special cameo is in that tune.
Musgraves embarked on a holiday tour to support the record all the way through Dec. 21st. Stops include the famed Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth before she closes out the year with John Prine and Jason Isbell at the Grand Ole Opry.
