Brolin revealed the casting news during a recent appearance on Conan. “I have a bit of a past and when they were trying to figure out who might be best able to best play George Jones, they thought, ‘What about Brolin?,'” the 47-year-old actor joked. “Who’s been to jail in the last 10 years? Let’s pick Brolin!’ I’m gonna do that with Jessica Chastain, who is gonna play Tammy Wynette. She’s amazing… It’s gonna be a lot of fun.”
The film will reportedly follow the Possum’s rise to stardom and his struggles with alcoholism and substance abuse during his high-profile seven-year marriage to Wynette.
News of the biopic first leaked last Spring, when the Jones estate authorized the use of his image for the film. The project is being financed and developed by 28 Entertainment, and is being written by Alan Wenkus, who wrote and researched the recent N.W.A. biopic, Straight Outta Compton. George’s widow, Nancy Jones, is also working as the film’s executive producer.
“We are very excited about moving into the next phase of bringing George’s remarkable life to the big screen,” 28 Entertainment’s Brian Hoffman told Billboard. “We are thrilled that so many talented people have shown a great deal of interest in this project.”
So far, it’s unclear when the film will go into production or if there is a planned release date.
