A new documentary from CMT will tell the story of Johnny Cash‘s incredible life and career through 10 of his most powerful songs.
According to Rolling Stone, Johnny Cash: American Rebel will be a two-hour event that explores some of Cash’s most influential recordings. The documentary will feature interviews from members of the Cash family, along with other friends and musical colleagues, including Eric Church and Merle Haggard.
The film features photographs and recorded footage of the musician both on-stage and in more intimate moments with his family. The 10 songs that will act as the soundtrack to this array of content that tells the story of Cash’s emotional state and the social climate of America through four decades of his life and career. The documentary will premiere on CMT to mark the anniversary of Cash’s death.
Cash has been a popular subject for creative projects in recent months. His son, John Carter Cash, recently released House of Cash: The Legacies of My Father, Johnny Cash, a memoir that details his experience growing up with his famous father. A new exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame, entitled “Nashville Cats: Dylan, Cash and the Nashville Cats,” recently opened in Nashville and explores the evolution of Cash’s career during the 1960’s and 1970’s.
Johnny Cash: American Rebel will air Sept. 12 on CMT.
