Johnny Cash’s ‘Unearthed’ Box Set Comes to Vinyl

Unearthed, a CD box set spanning Johnny Cash‘s final recordings, hit shelves two months after the Man in Black‘s Sept. 2003 death. Producer Rick Rubin’s American Recordings issued the set, introducing a new generation to Cash‘s timeless music and rebellious reputation. Now, the collection is finally slated for its first-ever vinyl release, out Nov. 3.

The ambitious vinyl edition spreads the original five volume, 79-song collection across nine LPs. Each volume has a definitive theme that proves Cash’s stylistic range, predating his 1994 American Recordings debut.

The acoustic-themed Who’s Gonna Cry revisits classic Cash song topics. Covers range from Jimmie Rodgers’ “Waiting For a Train” to Tom Waits’ “Down There By The Train.” Cash plugs in his electric guitar for Trouble in Mind, which features another wide-reaching celebration of American music, complete with a Tom Petty cameo.

Duets continue on acoustic collection Redemption Songs, named after the Bob Marley standard Cash sings with Joe Strummer. My Mother’s Hymn Book displays Cash’s lifelong love for gospel music. Finally, Best of Cash on American includes select cuts from Cash’s previously released work with Rubin. The set fittingly ends with the heart-wrenching cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” that probably defines Cash to a lot of younger fans.

In addition, the deluxe packaging includes a 60-page coffee table book. It features Sylvie Simmons‘ liner notes, Cash and Rubin’s comments on each song and rare photographs.

The book alone makes this a worthy Christmas gift for the hardest to please country music fanatic on your shopping list.
