Over the weekend, some of country music’s heavyweights paid tribute to John Lennon at “Imagine: John Lennon 75th Birthday Concert” at Madison Square Garden in New York. Lennon would’ve celebrated his 75th birthday in October.
Country legends Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson joined Chris Stapleton — a country legend in the making for the modern era — for a cover of “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away”, one of Lennon’s classic Beatles’ songs. Stapleton lead the trio, with support from Nelson and Kristofferson on the chorus.
Other country performances included the Eric Church, Sheryl Crow and newcomer Steven Tyler. The Roots, Tom Morello and Spoon also joined the evening’s lineup.
It’s pretty incredible to think about how much John Lennon’s music has influenced all genres of music, particularly country. You can even hear traces of his songwriting and vocal style in country songs on the radio today, so it’s no surprise country music’s brightest joined in to pay tribute to music legend.
