The Academy of Country Music Awards took a moment to remember the late Joey Feek during their televised ceremony on April 3.
Presenters Martina McBride and Darius Rucker took the stage to pay tribute to the Joey + Rory singer, who lost her long battle with cancer on March 4. As the duo’s song “Cheater, Cheater” played in the background, images of Feek from throughout her life were shown to viewers.
“A few weeks ago, we lost a member of our country music family with the loss of Joey Feek,” McBride said. “Joey was more than a wonderful singer and an ACM winning artist along with her husband, Rory. She was a beloved mom, daughter, family member and friend.”
“Of all of the different ways we could honor Joey, what would mean the most to Joey and her family is just for one more time, for all of her fans and all of us who love her to give her a big round of applause,” Rucker continued.
The thousands of country music stars and fans packed inside Las Vegas’ MGM Grand’s Garden Arena responded with a rousing standing ovation for Feek.
Joey + Rory were nominated for Vocal Duo of the Year, but the award was instead presented to Florida Georgia Line. Although Joey’s husband, Rory Feek, was invited to the ACM Awards, he opted to stay at home with their young daughter Indiana. The couple’s daughter, Hopie, and Joey’s best friend, Julie Zamboldi, represented the duo at the ceremony.
