Jim Nabors, Gomer Pyle from the 'Andy Griffith Show,' Dies

Jim Nabors, the actor who famously played Gomer Pyle on the Andy Griffith Show, died on Thursday morning. He was 87.

According to reports, TV producer Phil Arnone confirmed Nabors' death.

Born James Thurston Nabors in Sylacauga, Ala., he was a multi-faceted entertainer who did comedy and singing in addition to acting.

Nabors sang "Back Home Again in Indiana" at the beginning of each Indy 500 race from 1972 to 2014, missing only a few races during that extensive period.

Andy Griffith brought him onto the Andy Griffith Show after watching him at a California comedy club. Nabors' Gomer Pyle character was a beloved fixture of the show, eventually receiving his own spinoff, Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.

Nabors was living in retirement in Hawaii at the time of his death.
