Chart-topping country duo Sugarland may be on hiatus, but that hasn’t stopped members Kristian Bush and Jennifer Nettles from releasing new music.
Nettles premiered a new song on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon and brought the house down. The track, called “Unlove You,” was co-written by Nettles and the always phenomenal Brandy Clark, who was recently nominated for a GRAMMY for her album 12 Stories.
“Unlove You” is kind of the anti-love song, a passionate slow-burner that deals with a love that shouldn’t exist. Nettles gave a select few a sneak-peak of the song last month at CMT’s “Next Women of Country” showcase, telling the crowd, “Country music celebrates brokenness and it takes realness in life and shines a light through it.”
One of the most-celebrated female vocalists of the last decade, Nettles is known for her uniquely tinged timbre, soaring vibrato and self-written songs (along with Bush) that manage to avoid country cliches while celebrating the honesty of the genre. In many ways, “Unlove You” carries the same weight and heart-shattering delivery as Sugarland’s “Stay,” a song that earned the duo two GRAMMYs in 2009.
Nettles announced “Unlove You” is also available to download via iTunes. You can also see her on the upcoming CMA Country Christmas telecast and during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
