Few songwriters hit the nail on the head like Jason Isbell. And as one of the finest artists of the modern era, Isbell’s craft is on full display in this performance of “Something More Than Free” at the Grand Ole Opry. This tune may be one of the best working class anthems this side of Bruce Springsteen.
“Sunday morning I’m too tired to go to Church,” sings Isbell. “But I thank God for the work.” Watch the whole moving performance below.
Isbell’s wife Amanda Shires joins him during the performance, adding an unmistakably emotional component with her fiddle work and harmonies. She’s a talented artist in her own right, but it’s always magical to see the two perform together. The couple tied the knot in 2013 after he completed his fourth record, Southeastern. Todd Snider officiated, because of course he did.
2015’s Something More Than Free launched Jason Isbell into the stratosphere after a strong showing at the Americana Music Honors & Awards. But he’s been at it awhile; that was his fifth solo record, after all. Isbell also spent six years performing with the Drive-By Truckers from 2001 to 2007.
