If you can overlook the multi-million dollar price tag, you could be the next owner of one of the most historic and beautiful ranches in America.
Shakespeare Ranch is a sprawling estate located in the picturesque basin of Lake Tahoe in Glenbrook, Nev. The 133-acre property features incredible scenery, historic buildings and amazing amenities that visitors and residents have been enjoying for over 150 years.
Astoundingly, only two owners have inhabited the ranch since it was established in 1861. The property was originally named Glenbrook Inn and, at one point, was the most productive lumber operation in the Lake Tahoe Basin. In the early 1900s though, the basin took a turn and transformed into the luxurious resort community it is today.
According to the listing, the home was eventually renamed “Shakespeare Ranch” – after the property’s “towering rocky outcrop, Shakespeare Rock, where early settlers claimed they could see the cameo profile of the ‘Old Bard.'”
The current owner hired architect Marc Appleton to help preserve and restore buildings and various features on the sprawling estate. The owner also brought back previously popular attractions such as the horse-drawn stagecoach rides, once a big part of the vacation destination nearly a hundred years earlier.
The 5,000-square-foot barn, built in 1873, has held many large-scale concerts, comedy shows and other events with celebrities including Robin Williams, Emeril Lagasse and Lionel Richie. Its walls are covered with posters, photographs and mementos from over the years.
These photos show just a fraction of the amazing amenities included with the purchase of the ranch. There’s also a wine tasting cellar, a massive green house surrounded by vegetable gardens, and multiple tennis courts. The property even holds an area set up for rodeos, with horse stables and bleachers for spectating visitors.
