How to Make Sweet and Smoky Grilled Watermelon

Summer calls for a hot grill on the back porch and something sweet and refreshing to go with it. Chef Justin from Fresh From Florida has the perfect idea – summer watermelon grilled to perfection for a smoky, sweet and hydrating treat.

His grilling method only requires four basic steps:

  1. Slice the watermelon into 1-inch-thick slices.
  2. Apply a light coating of non-stick spray to the heated grill.
  3. Place the watermelon directly onto the grill.
  4. Grill the melon for just about 30 seconds on each side. Chef Justin notes that you don’t want to cook the watermelon, but just give it some smoky flavor and grill marks.

Since watermelon is 92% water, it is one of the most hydrating summer foods around. It also happens to be both a fruit and a vegetable (in the squash and cucumber family) and was first grown around 5,000 years ago in Egypt.

Even better, watermelon has tons of free radical-fighting lycopene. It has even more than a tomato, in fact. This miracle plant also has a powerful amino acid that has the potential to relieve sore muscles. So after that game of touch football, maybe a little bit of this grilled watermelon is all you need to rehydrate and relax.
