Cody Jinks just shared his cover of Merle Haggard’s “The Way I Am.” Jinks recorded the tune for his upcoming Aug. 12 album, I’m Not The Devil.
The tune is a perfect match for Jinks. His smooth vocal glides effortlessly through the classic track, hitting all the right inflections. The Haggard influence certainly shines through on the track. But there’s no mistaking Jinks’ take for anything but reverential to the original.
Everything about the tune screams classic country. From the lead slide guitar to the chord progression and chorus harmonies. Needless to say, The Hag would approve.
Sonny Throckmorton wrote the tune, and Merle Haggard loved it. So he released it as the lead single to a 1980 album with the same name.
Perhaps most apt, “The Way I Am” occupies a fitting place on his upcoming record. Jinks’ career is on the way up after 2015’s Adobe Sessions, he has the country music world’s attention now. There’s an obvious significance in including a song called “The Way I Am” to an album called I’m Not The Devil.
Cody Jinks explores darker depths on the upcoming record. He spends plenty of time showing listeners he may not be what they think he is. But with this Haggard tune, he gets to honor a hero and tell them what he is.
