One of the craziest things to come out of the 50th annual CMA Awards was the surprise collaboration between Beyonce and the Dixie Chicks. Up until a few hours before the ceremony, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who’d believed that they’d be on stage at the CMAs, especially during its 50th anniversary celebration. Still, it seems like the Country Music Association wanted to keep country fans on their toes.
Earlier this year, Beyonce made waves with the release of her concept album, Lemonade. The track “Daddy Lessons” features a sound that encompassed elements of zydeco, country and the blues. Consequently, many heated discussions over whether or not to classify it as a country song soon filled social media. But then again, you could ask that question of many tracks that are on the genre’s top 40 charts right now.
The always fearless Dixie Chicks decided to add a little extra dash of country to the song by covering it during their ongoing DCX MMXVI World Tour. Now, the two have combined both versions, along with the Chicks’ hit song “Long Time Gone,” for a mash-up that’s definitely raising some eyebrows.
So what do you think? Check out the studio version of Beyonce and the Chicks’ collaboration below and decide for yourself.
The new version is definitely more stripped down than Beyonce’s original. Still, it features plenty of zydeco touches and the signature plucky sound of the Chicks. But is it country enough to make it onto country radio? Only time will tell.
