John Joyce is 83-years-old and has been mowing lawns for more than 20 years in his Pinellas Park, Florida neighborhood. When the transmission died in his 1994 truck a few months ago, Joyce had to walk to each customer’s home, despite his bad knees and arthritis.
Longtime customers Robert and Nikki Norton took notice and decided to help. They started a GoFundMe page with the hopes of raising money to help buy Joyce a new vehicle. In just a few weeks, they were able to raise over $13,000 for Joyce.
The couple approached a used car dealership that gave them a deal on a spacious 2004 Nissan pick-up truck. They had enough money left over to give Joyce for insurance, as well as a gift card for a new lawn mower.
When the couple and a group of other customers presented the gift to Joyce, he was shocked at the outpouring of love.
“He was amazed too, he couldn’t believe it. He looked like he was ready to start crying, and then I started crying,” Robert said. “It was super exhilarating to do a good thing for such a good man. I’m at a loss of words.”
For the Nortons, the small effort it took to raise money for Joyce was more than worth it.
“People’s needs don’t arise when it’s convenient for you, they arise when they have needs,” said Robert. “John’s needs didn’t come at a convenient time, but we needed to help him. I didn’t want him to have to wait.”
Joyce, who was humbled by the incredible gift, said he was just excited to get back to work. “I think it’s wonderful,” he said happily. “There couldn’t be anything better.”
