Did we really need science to tell us what we already knew? That whiskey is good for you?
Nonetheless, a recent article lends support to your grandmother’s theory that a hot toddy is the best cure for the cold. The article claims that because sleep is really what your body needs to fight off an infection, there is no healthier and natural way to get your z’s than with a hot toddy.
But a hot toddy does more than just ease you into sleep. Like NyQuil, a hot toddy acts as a decongestant, clearing that nose and throat-clogging mucus away so you can breathe easily again. The alcohol in the whiskey dilates your blood vessels, thus easing the job of your mucous membrane to stave off the infection. Plus (yes, there’s another plus!) the whiskey actually helps battle the growth of new microorganisms.
And with flu season already in full swing, the hot toddy might just be a life saver (not an actual life saver, but it should help you feel a lot better).
For extra decongestant and anti-microorganism power, grate a bit of garlic and ginger into your drink.
And no one needs to tell you that herbal tea, lemon, and hot steam are a potent combination to clear up that cold. And a splash of honey, a shot of whiskey, (maybe even a pinch of cayenne) and you’ll be back on your feet by morning.
Remember, one hot toddy should be just right to do the trick. Any more and you might be doing more harm than good.
