Country music icon Glen Campbell won his sixth Grammy Award last night for the song “I’m Not Gonna Miss You.”
The ailing singer is in the late stages of Alzheimer’s disease, so he was not able to attend the Grammy Awards.
Campbell co-wrote the winning song, “I’m Not Gonna Miss You,” with Julian Raymond for the 2014 documentary “Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me.” It is a bittersweet ballad he wrote to bring awareness to the debilitating disease he has battled since 2011. The documentary followed the legendary singer on his 2012 farewell tour.
His wife, Kim Campbell accepted the award on his behalf and gave a touching speech, stating “I’m so proud of him tonight. It’s been an amazing journey; he’s been so courageous in bringing awareness to Alzheimer’s and caregiving. Sadly, he can’t be with us tonight because he is in the late stages of Alzheimer’s, but he is healthy and cheerful.”
She went on to speak of his strength and spirit as he completed this final recording and embarked on his farewell tour. Her poignant words brought the audience to its feet with thunderous applause for both her husband’s achievement and her loving words.
Campbell’s song is also nominated for an Oscar, so the highly celebrated artist might have yet another award to add to his collection.
