Billboard has analyzed their country charts going back all the way to 1958 and revealed their overall top-charting country artist. With 44 number one hits on the Hot Country Songs chart, celebrated country star George Strait landed in first place.
The music chart ranked top country singers, singles and albums by looking at “weekly performances on Hot Country Songs (from its Oct. 20, 1958 inception through June 4, 2016) and Top Country Albums (from its Jan. 11, 1964 inception through June 4, 2016).”
Strait kicked off his chart-topping career with “Fool Hearted Memory” in 1982, a song off of his Strait from the Heart album. He has also had 26 number one albums on the Top Country Albums chart. Strait’s most recent number one single is “Cold Beer Conversation,” which was released just last year.
Rounding out the top five in Billboard’s list of top country artists are Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Alabama and Conway Twitty.
Billboard also looked at top country songs and albums. The number one charting country song of all time may surprise you! Florida Georgia Line’s summer anthem, “Cruise” took the top spot, while “Walk on By” by Leroy Van Dyke and “Wanted” by Hunter Hayes follow behind in the top three.
Shania Twain’s Come On Over ranked the highest when it came to country albums, followed up by Garth Brooks’ No Fences and Taylor Swift’s self-titled debut album.
