Chris Stapleton Covers ‘Free Bird’ at the El Rey in Los Angeles

Freeeeeee Birrrrrdd!!!” is the bane of every band’s existence, probably even Lynyrd Skynyrd at this point. The cry for the most drunkenly requested song of all time is usually followed it with a loud “WHOOOOO!”, the flicker of a raised lighter by a mulleted fellow, and the musicians shaking their heads on stage. But not Chris Stapleton.

He recently played a snippet of “Free Bird”, perhaps without a request, during his Monday night show at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles.

Stapleton played a minute of the Southern rock classic before launching into “Sometimes I Cry”, the closing track on his debut album, Traveller. Check it out below.
