So-Cal country artist Sam Outlaw has been celebrated for his mixture of traditional storytelling, old school honky tonk and modern mariachi. Today, the rising artist is giving fans a sample of his favorite retro country hits through a Spotify playlist shared exclusively with Wide Open Country.
Outlaw’s debut full-length album, Angeleno, was released at a time when more and more new artists are paying homage to traditional country music from the 60s and 70s. Although his record was in part inspired by California’s classic Bakersfield sound, Outlaw also combined elements of more modern and alternative country music. Although he’s had a life-long love of classic country artists, the 33-year-old admits he has a soft spot for the genre’s more recent hits.
“For a long time I mistakenly believed the “real” “good” country music ended around 1975,” Outlaw tells Wide Open Country. “Then my wife turned me on to the great neo-traditionalists and singers of the 80s and 90s. I have way too many favorites to put into one playlist, but this is a good start.”
