This video filmed in 2007 has a somewhat prophetic headline: “This guy WILL be HUGE within 5 years”.
In the clip, Eric Church plays “Guys Like Me” on a tailgate in a Nashville parking lot. Church was giving an impromptu performance for his fan club, “The Church Choir”. At the time the video was posted to YouTube, Church had already signed to Capitol Records, but was not the star he is today.
“Guys Like Me” was released in January of 2007 but peaked on the charts at number 17; it was a stepping stone to what is now a stellar career.
Church is known for his irrepressible perseverance in his performances, having been kicked out of restaurants at some of his first gigs for playing too long, and later kicked off Rascal Flatts’ tour for spending too much time onstage as the opener. More recently, he played a solo arena show when his band and crew were all ill with stomach flu. So it’s no surprise that he spent some of his early days just sitting outside on his tailgate in Nashville playing for whoever wanted to listen.
