The 40th anniversary of Charlie Daniels‘ legendary Volunteer Jam was celebrated with performances by over 20 musical acts on Aug. 12 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn.
One of the most memorable moments of the night was when Eric Church put his own stamp on a Daniels’ 1980 hit, “In America”.
Church joined Daniels onstage for the performance and brought all of his signature swagger and attitude to the rendition. Throughout the video above, you can see 78-year-old Daniels’ smiling expression as he backs up Church on fiddle for most of the song, which he notes is older than Church himself after the performance.
The patriotic anthem was the perfect choice for the modern country outlaw and stood out among five hours of incredible collaborative performances.
Volunteer Jam was first held in 1974 and has since become an annual event raising money for the Journey Home Project. The project helps support military personnel and their families, connecting them with resources to help support their health and education. This year’s event also featured standout performances from Army vet Craig Morgan, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Alabama.
