Our guest today is Carson McHone, a rising artist in the Americana music scene. Carson was born and raised in Austin, Texas, where she’s cultivated a solid following in recent years. Her music blends traditional, honky-tonk country with singer-songwriter, folk music. From the time she was a baby, her parents played her all of the greats. It rubbed off: you can definitely hear traces of the great songwriters like Townes Van Zandt, Emmylou Harris and Guy Clark in her songs. She’s also skilled at commanding audiences on the dance floor — a skill she picked up working the stage at the White Horse, one of Austin’s modern honky-tonks.
In the past year, she has expanded outside of the Austin scene and is starting to make a footprint on the national scene. Carson has performed with Gary Clark, Jr., Ryan Bingham, Jerry Jeff Walker, Charlie Mars, among other heavyweights. You may have heard her sing on Ray Wylie Hubbard’s recent cut, “Chick Singer, Badass Rockin’.”
Carson talked with us about how she got her start, cutting her teeth in the honky-tonks and expanding beyond Austin’s music scene. She also performs a couple songs off her most recent album, Goodluck Man.
You can catch Carson perform a showcase this Saturday at AmericanaFest 2016 in Nashville. If you’re in the Music City for the festival, do yourself a favor and catch her live show.
