At this year’s celebration of the 2015 Laureates for the Polar Music Prize, Emmylou Harris‘ incredible career was celebrated with performances and speeches by her musical peers. During a special banquet held in Stockholm, Harris was serenaded with a very special performance from indie folk duo First Aid Kit. The Swedish-born Soderberg sisters were clearly touched by the opportunity to sing their song “Emmylou” to the woman who inspired it many years ago. “We never thought we’d get to sing this song in front of you,” Klara Soderberg said to Harris from the stage.
The track, which is “about the joy and the magic of singing together with someone that you love,” is a sweet and poignant track that honors the classic musical love stories of Harris and Gram Parsons, as well as Johnny and June Carter Cash. As soon as the song began, Harris is visibly touched by the song and wipes away tears throughout.
The night was an emotional one for Harris, who brought tears to the eyes of those in attendance with her touching acceptance speech for the Prize. “I have only one regret on this magical evening, that my beloved parents, Walter and Eugenia, did not live to share this with me,” She said, according to Billboard. “It didn’t matter to them if I was successful or not, they only cared for my happiness. Their unconditional love carried me through good times and bad and will abide with me whatever the future holds, ’til my journey ends.”
