Sir Elton John is set to make an appearance on ABC’s country music drama Nashville this season.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the English chart-topper will perform alongside rising songwriter Gunnar, played by Sam Palladio, during the May 18 season finale. The legendary songwriter and performer rarely crosses over into the world of television, so this appearance will likely help drive up viewership for the somewhat struggling series.
Although the show has a strong cult following, ratings have kept Nashville on the edge of cancellation for each of its three seasons. This year, producers have recruited big stars like John, along with pop star Kesha, Kelsea Ballerini and Thomas Rhett, who will also appear as themselves this season.
It’s a win-win for Nashville and John, who is busy promoting his most recent album, Wonderful Crazy Night, which was released in February. The record was likely a catalyst for John’s appearance, as his new project was produced by former Nashville executive music producer T-Bone Burnett, who is married to Nashville‘s creator Callie Khouri.
So will a duet with Elton John help Gunner finally break it big? Fans will just have to wait and see when the season finale of Nashville airs Wednesday, May 18 at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.
